What is the Italian conversation course and who is it for?
One of the most common frustrations I hear from my students is this: I understand a lot of Italian, but when I try to speak, the words do not come out. You know the grammar. You know the vocabulary. But speaking in real time feels completely different from studying quietly. That gap between understanding and speaking is exactly what my conversation course solves.
The Italian conversation course is a group program that focuses purely on speaking practice through interactive sessions. We do not spend time on grammar explanations or vocabulary lists. You already have that foundation. Instead, we spend every minute actually speaking Italian. You learn to communicate spontaneously and naturally in real-life contexts. The course improves your pronunciation, expands your active vocabulary, and builds your confidence in speaking.
This course is for students who already have basic Italian knowledge and want to practice speaking in a supportive group environment. If you are a complete beginner, I recommend starting with my free crash course to build a foundation first. As language learning research confirms, active speaking practice is the most effective way to develop fluency, and this course is built entirely around that principle.
How does the course improve your pronunciation?
Pronunciation is not something you can learn from a book. You need to hear the sounds, practice making them, and receive feedback on whether you are getting them right. That is exactly what happens in my conversation course.
During each session, you listen to me speaking Italian naturally and practice imitating my pronunciation. I correct your accent and intonation in real time. If you are struggling with a particular sound, like the Italian R or the difference between single and double consonants, we work on it together until it clicks.
One technique I use is shadowing, where you repeat after me immediately while trying to match my exact pronunciation and rhythm. This trains your mouth and ears to work together. Another technique is minimal pair practice, where we work on words that differ by only one sound, like nonno and nonna or fatto and fatto. These exercises target the specific sounds that learners find difficult.
The group setting actually helps with pronunciation. When you hear other students practicing, you learn from their mistakes and successes. And practicing in a group reduces the self-consciousness that often comes with speaking a new language. For deeper one-on-one pronunciation work, consider my personal Italian tutoring.
How does the course expand your vocabulary in a practical way?
Many students know hundreds of Italian words from studying, but when they need to use them in conversation, the words do not come to mind. That is because passive vocabulary knowing a word when you see or hear it is different from active vocabulary being able to use it when you speak.
My conversation course converts your passive vocabulary into active vocabulary. Through repeated use in real conversations, words and phrases that you previously only recognized become words that you actually use. We cover commonly used Italian vocabulary and idiomatic expressions in each session. I explain the meaning and usage of each expression, and then you practice using it in conversation.
Over the four weeks of the course, your active vocabulary grows naturally through repeated exposure and use. By the end, you will find yourself using expressions that you previously only understood when hearing them.
How does the course develop spontaneous speaking skills?
The biggest challenge in learning a language is learning to think in that language. Most beginners translate in their heads. They hear Italian, translate it to English, think of a response in English, and translate it back to Italian. This process is slow and exhausting. Real conversation requires you to think and respond directly in Italian.
My conversation course breaks this translation habit through structured practice. We use role-playing games where you act out real-life situations. You might扮演 a tourist asking for directions, a customer ordering at a restaurant, or a student introducing themselves to a class. These simulations force you to respond quickly in Italian without the time to translate.
We also use real-life situation simulations where we practice common scenarios like making a phone call, handling a problem at a hotel, or having a casual chat with a neighbor. These scenarios build the specific language skills you need for real situations.
The group setting gives you multiple opportunities to speak in each session. You practice with me, with other students, and in small breakout groups. This variety of speaking contexts builds your confidence and flexibility.
What is the course structure and schedule?
The course runs for four weeks with one session per week. Each session is 45 minutes long, conducted online via video conferencing. Sessions are scheduled in the evening to accommodate different time zones.
Each class follows a clear structure. We start with a warm-up conversation where everyone shares something about their week in Italian. This gets you speaking immediately and builds community within the group. Then we move into the focused topic for the session, which could be a specific situation like ordering at a restaurant, a theme like describing your daily routine, or a skill like using the past tense in conversation. We end with wrap-up practice where you apply everything from the session in an open conversation.
Throughout the session, I provide personalized feedback on your pronunciation, grammar, and word choice. You also receive written feedback after each session with notes on areas to improve.
The total cost for the four-week course is 72 Euros. This works out to 18 Euros per session, which is significantly more affordable than private tutoring while still providing personalized attention through the small group format. See my course prices page for a full comparison of all options.
What level of Italian do I need to join?
The course is suitable for students with basic Italian knowledge, from beginner to intermediate levels. You should know basic grammar structures like present tense verb conjugations and essential vocabulary for everyday topics. If you can introduce yourself, talk about your hobbies, and describe your daily routine in simple Italian, you are ready.
If you are an absolute beginner, I recommend starting with my free crash course. It includes ten video lessons that teach you essential Italian phrases and vocabulary. Once you have completed that, you will have the foundation needed to participate in the conversation course.
If you are an advanced learner, this course still offers value. The small group setting gives you ample speaking time, and I can adapt the conversation topics to challenge you with more complex subjects and nuanced expressions.
What results can I expect after four weeks?
After completing the four-week conversation course, most students notice a significant improvement in their speaking confidence. They speak more fluidly, with fewer pauses and hesitations. They use a wider range of vocabulary and expressions. Their pronunciation sounds more natural. And most importantly, they feel comfortable starting and maintaining conversations in Italian.
Many students continue with additional four-week sessions to keep building their skills. With each session, their fluency improves and their active vocabulary expands. Some students combine the conversation course with private tutoring for a comprehensive learning experience. Contact me to discuss which combination works best for your goals.
How do I enroll in the conversation course?
Enrolling is simple. Contact me through my website or email me at giulia@italianlesson.online to check availability for the next session. Groups are kept small, typically three to five students, to ensure everyone gets enough speaking time.
If the current session is full, I will add you to the waitlist for the next one.
